IAB Condemns Armed Attack Against Journalist Óscar Merino Ruiz in Mexico
The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) strongly condemns the armed attack perpetrated against journalist Óscar Merino Ruiz in the city of Pinotepa Nacional, state of Oaxaca, Mexico, who was seriously injured after being shot.
As established by the Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, any intimidation, threat, or aggression against social communicators violates fundamental rights and severely restricts the exercise of freedom of expression.
The IAB urges the competent authorities in Mexico to conduct an immediate, exhaustive, and transparent investigation to clarify the facts, identify those responsible, and ensure that this attack does not go unpunished.
The IAB expresses its solidarity with journalist Óscar Merino Ruiz, his family, and the Mexican journalistic community, and reaffirms its permanent commitment to the defense of freedom of expression and the press in the Americas.
