IAB condemns attacks against journalists in ChileThe International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) strongly condemns the attacks suffered by the Mega and Canal 13 news teams in the Meiggs neighborhood of Santiago while they were carrying out their work as journalists.
The use of violence to intimidate and endanger journalists and media workers is an unacceptable act that undermines freedom of expression and the public's right to be informed.
As stated in the Declaration of Principles of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights: “The murder, kidnapping, intimidation, and threatening of social communicators, as well as the material destruction of media outlets, violate the fundamental rights of individuals and severely restrict freedom of expression. It is the duty of States to prevent and investigate these acts, punish their perpetrators, and ensure adequate redress for the victims.”
IAB expresses its solidarity with the affected journalists and supports the statement issued by the National Television Association of Chile (ANATEL), urging the Chilean authorities to adopt effective measures to guarantee the safety of those who work in journalism.
