Statment from the International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) - Nicaragua

The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) strongly condemns and rejects the announcement by the dictatorial regime of Nicaragua to withdraw from UNESCO in retaliation for awarding the “UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize” to the Nicaraguan
newspaper La Prensa.

This latest manifestation of Nicaraguan authoritarianism seeks to silence critical voices, undermine international cooperation, and further isolate the people of Nicaragua from their fundamental rights. The decision to abandon UNESCO for recognizing a courageous and committed media outlet such as La Prensa, whose team has been forced to continue its work in exile, reveals the regime’s profound contempt for press freedom and democratic principles.

The IAB expresses its firm solidarity with the exiled journalists of Nicaragua, with the team at La Prensa, and with all media professionals who continue to face persecution for carrying out their work with integrity.
