Venezuela: New violations of Freedom of Expression and Human Rights

The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) reiterates its strong condemnation and rejection of the systematic violations of freedom of expression and human rights in Venezuela.

Hundreds of radio and television stations have been forcibly closed down in Venezuela, and this deplorable list has been joined by Radiohispana 895 in the state of Yaracuy, which was broadcasting 'La Hora Tricolor', a programme hosted by Biagio Pilieri, a journalist and
politician who was arrested on 28 August last year by the repressive forces in Venezuela without due process or procedural guarantees.

This closure adds to the immense number of threats, violence and arbitrary detentions against journalists and exacerbates the constant persecution of the media and press workers that the Venezuelan regime has been carrying out following the questionable electoral results
in that country.

IAB demands the immediate respect of the Constitution and the human rights enshrined in the international treaties signed and in force in Venezuela.
